This is a classic songwriter story; as you may have noticed above, it took me over a year to write this song. Sometimes I come up with music that I love, but for the life of me I can't find a lyric that matches its emotion. This was one of those. I had the guitar riff for a long time, and actually a year to the day (I didn't plan that - it just kinda happened, honest), I got an idea for a lyric that might fit:

"She said Hawaii is too far..."

So "Hawaii" became a story about a guy who runs away from love and finally stops running, only to find that love has passed him by. I wanted this song to be a juxtaposition of happy and sad - bittersweet - because I guess that's what love is. So the guitar riff is funky and fun but the story is really depressing, so it almost contradicts itself... but somehow that's why it makes sense.
